- Introduction
-
Applied Biotechnology is a pioneering discipline that will be a core element of future industries in Korea and other countries through specialization in areas such as bioengineering or eco-friendly agriculture. The major is part of an industryacademia- research on-site training system whose endeavors include: finding the causes of diseases and developing appropriate treatment technologies, identifying the characteristics of genes through new DNA analysis technologies, and pinpointing the cause of diseases and developing bioindustry materials. It is also striving to produce internationallyminded workers in the biotech sector through overseas training programs (e.g. Asia Eco-friendly Technology Training Program, eco-friendly development & survey program (Netherlands), KOICA overseas volunteer teams, English education and on-site training at PCC Center (Philippines)). Graduates go on to graduate-level programs in Korea or overseas or play key roles at industrial sites (biotech venture firms, pharmaceutical companies, biotech-related industrial sites, bio-centers, and DNA analysis/gene identification companies) or national research centers (National Institute of Animal Science, rating agencies, HACCP Institute, and GAP certification centers). Recently, the department began expanding the scope of students’ overseas employment through a KOICA training session.
