- Introduction
-
The goal of the English Language & Culture major is to cultivate individuals who are proficient in English, knowledgeable in English language and literature, and have the skills required to understand the humanities and/or social sciences in an era that is increasingly global and information-based. To produce experts in diverse fields, including translators, interpreters, authors, humanities or social science researchers, employees at trading companies, or English instructors, the department conducts comprehensive assessments and accredited exams of students’ English skills. Students will not only develop practical skills, such as conversation, writing, and debate, but also learn about the sociocultural contexts of works of classical and contemporary literature of England and the United States. They can also study English from a linguistics standpoint, such as sounds, meaning, and sentence structure, to gain a deeper understanding of the language. The solid foundation in literature and linguistics that students acquire in this major will allow them to study social phenomena, while the diverse collaborative activities will give them an awareness of being a global citizen.
